Relaxing or Escaping?

Escapism Does NOT🟰 Relaxation

In our fast-paced world, it’s natural to seek relaxation and relief from the demands of daily life. Yet, many of us aren’t truly relaxing, leading to chronic states of stress.

There’s a common misconception that escapism is the same as relaxation. However, there is a huge distinction.

Escapism involves temporary distractions that give us a break from reality, such as binge-watching TV shows, scrolling through social media, or excessive gaming.

Not that there is anything wrong with it, but doesn’t address the underlying stressors and lacks long-term benefits. In fact, most screen activities are designed to tap into our sympathetic (fight/flight) nervous system to keep us aroused.

Relaxation goes beyond distraction. It encompasses a deeper sense of calm, rejuvenation, and inner peace.
It engages us in conscious activities such as art, dancing, and time in nature. These tap into our parasympathetic (rest/digest) nervous system and promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

How can we can embrace TRUE relaxation?

1. Mindfulness and Meditation practices such as yoga

2. Engaging in Creative pursuits such as playing an instrument

3. Connecting with Nature such as walking barefoot on the ground

4. Self-Care such as warm baths and self massage

5. Community activities such as having a silly goose time with loved ones

Escapism may offer a temporary reprieve, but it falls short of providing genuine relaxation and addressing the underlying causes of stress and anxiety.

By understanding the difference between escapism and relaxation, we can choose meaningful and sustainable practices that promote stress relief.

Just get clear on your intention for doing a thing— to temporarily have fun and escape for a while, or to heal a bit of the root stress and actually fill your cup— then you won’t fool yourself into thinking you’re relaxing.

Remember stress is at its peak this time of year, so really prioritize time for relaxing- for the sake of you and your loved ones!
